An infringement notice is a fine issued by Victoria Police when you commit certain low-level offences.
You can pay your fine, apply for a due date extension, or dispute the fine, under specific circumstances. Infringement notices are paid through Fines Victoria.
Receiving an infringement notice
If you commit an offence and receive a fine, Victoria Police will issue you a penalty infringement notice. The notice can be given to you in person or by mail, email, or text.
The fine will be transferred to be managed by Fines Victoria.
Once we issue a penalty infringement notice, it is considered ‘served’. You will have 21 days to pay the fine from issue date, regardless of how it was delivered.

Pay the penalty
The delivery of an infringement notice is a chance to pay the penalty immediately instead of going through court proceedings.
The details and options on how to pay will be listed on your infringement notice.
Pay your fine through Fines Victoria.
Payment extensions and payment plans
If you cannot pay your fine in full by the due date, you can:
- apply to pay by instalments
- apply for an extension on the due date.
There are certain eligibility requirements for both options. Visit Fines Victoria to see if you meet the conditions for a payment extension or payment plan.
Dispute the infringement notice
If you believe that you were incorrectly served the notice, there are several options you can take.
Take steps to dispute the infringement as early as possible. Do not wait until you receive a penalty reminder notice before you take action, you may not be able to dispute the fine after then.
Official warnings
In some cases, we may withdraw the infringement notice and issue an official warning in its place. This means that you will not have to pay your fine.
Factors taken into account for an official warning include:
- time of offence
- weather conditions
- traffic density
- speeds of less than 10 km/h over the posted limit
- type of road conditions.
To be considered for an official warning, you must request a review through Fines Victoria.
Special circumstances
If you have a serious condition or are experiencing personal difficulties, you could apply for a review of your fine.
You must be able to provide specific evidence to show the link between your special circumstances and the offence. For more information, see special circumstances.
If you don't deal with your fine
You must take action to resolve your infringement by the due date.
If you do not, Fines Victoria can take steps such as adding a penalty fee or suspending your licence.
